Tummy Tuck (Extended or Circular)

Abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall. An Extended Tummy Tuck is basically a standard abdominoplasty with the addition of recontouring of the hips, flanks, and even the lateral thigh, and a Circular Tummy Tuck addresses everything the extended abdominoplasty does with the addition of excess lower back skin and elevating the buttocks.

Benefits and Risks

The primary benefit of a tummy tuck is the removal of excess skin and fat, resulting in a flatter and smoother abdominal appearance. The procedure can also tighten the abdominal muscles, which can improve core strength and posture. Additionally, the removal of excess skin and fat can alleviate issues such as skin irritation or infections in the folds of the skin.

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved with a tummy tuck. Some potential risks include infection, bleeding, poor wound healing, scarring, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Additionally, there is a risk of developing blood clots, which can be life-threatening. It is important to discuss these risks with a qualified surgeon and to follow all pre-and post-operative instructions to minimize the chances of complications.

Safety and Recovery

Tummy tucks are generally considered safe procedures when performed by a qualified and experienced surgeon in an accredited facility. However, as with any surgery, there are risks involved. It is essential to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon and to thoroughly research their qualifications and experience before undergoing a tummy tuck.

Recovery time following a tummy tuck can vary depending on the extent of the procedure and the individual’s overall health. Patients should expect to take at least one to two weeks off from work and avoid strenuous activity for several weeks. It is also essential to follow all post-operative instructions, including wearing compression garments and taking prescribed medications.

Cost and Price Differences

The cost of a tummy tuck can vary depending on several factors, such as the extent of the procedure, the surgeon’s experience, and the location of the practice. On average, a tummy tuck can cost between $8,500 to $16,000 in the United States. However, the cost may increase if additional procedures such as liposuction or a breast lift are performed at the same time.

The cost of a tummy tuck in Mexico can be significantly lower than in the United States, with prices ranging from 40% to 60% less than USA prices.

The Best Candidates

First, you need extra skin on your abdomen, or muscle weakness, or both to benefit from a tummy tuck. In addition, you must be in relatively good physical shape to tolerate this procedure. Women who have experienced one or more pregnancies are often good candidates for abdominoplasty. Pregnancy affects each woman differently. In some cases, pregnancy may lead to muscle weakness alone; in others, it may result in the loose skin of the abdomen. However, some women may have loose skin, muscle weakness, and extra fat. For these reasons, a tummy tuck is part of a mommy makeover, a combination procedure designed to help mothers regain their pre-pregnancy body contours.

Tummy Tuck

Tummy tucks are often compared to liposuction, which is a procedure that removes excess fat from the body. While liposuction can be effective in reducing fat, it does not address excess skin or muscle laxity in the abdominal area. Therefore, a tummy tuck may be a better option for individuals who have significant skin and muscle laxity in addition to excess fat. The procedure for a tummy tuck typically involves the following steps:

  • Local anesthesia is administered to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout the procedure.
  • An incision is made across the lower abdomen, typically just above the pubic bone.
  • Excess skin and fat are removed from the abdominal area, and the underlying muscles are tightened.
  • The remaining skin is then repositioned, and the belly button is relocated to a natural-looking position.
  • The incisions are closed with sutures, and a compression garment is placed over the abdomen to aid in healing and reduce swelling.
